“The Lady Soldiers (not sure if that’s even what we were called) Basketball Team was born in the winter of 1989. The five starters of the team had all belonged to successful high school teams, and the other three or so on the team had never played before. Coach Wolford was not detoured by this, and he worked relentlessly with us to make us a team. I specifically remember playing against Webster University. When we played at their place, we were incredibly intimidated and lost. But we beat them in the rematch at SLCC! Overall, we did have a winning season. We ended up going to Pennsylvania for the NCCAA National Tournament. The following year at least two girls transferred to different schools and others were focusing on other things, so we did not have a team. Over the years, SLCC was only able to put together five ladies’ teams, and the statistics are sporadic. But the memories are still great.”
